Tensiometers

Tensiometer to measure matric water potential

Tensiometers measure the force that plant exerts to extract water from the soil. Referred to as soil suction, tension, or water potential, the measurement indicates the amount of energy plants exert to extract and use water from the soil.

A tensiometer comprises:

  • a porous ceramic cup,
  • a plastic body tube,
  • a dial gauge (manual tensiometer) or a digital transducer (logging or IoT tensiometer)

Both the manual and digital transducer tensiometers use the Soil Moisture Equipment TS25 Jetfill Tensiometer as the basis for the system.

The soil water tension is transmitted via the ceramic cup into the tensiometer. The vacuum inside the tensiometer is measured by a dial gauge or digital transducer (which gives a continuous analogue output signal) for data logging or Internet of Things connectivity.

The Jetfill Tensiometer features the Jetfill reservoir for push-button convenience and minimisation of soil disturbance during service. The modular construction allows for easy replacement of the porous ceramic cup, dial gauge/transducer, or addition of extensions for flexibility and variety in use.

Jetfill Tensiometers are available in lengths from 15 cm (6”) to 91 cm (36”), supplied as standard with a 1 bar gauge or an optional ½ bar gauge. The gauge can be substituted for a transducers for IoT or datalogging applications. The full range of Jetfill Tensiometers are found in the specifications tab.
