Plant Water Potential
Plant Water Potential Station
The measurement of plant water potential is an element in the management of plant water relations. By using the dendrometer, maximum daily shrinkage can be measured – a recognised proxy for plant water stress. For an absolute measurement of plant water stress, the SDI-12 Psychrometer provides continuous measurement of plant water potential in megapascals. With proven science behind the Psychrometer, many publications have used the PSY1 Psychrometer for continuous measurements and the benchmarking of novel approaches to the measurement of plant water potential or stress.
ICT International offer solutions for the continuous measurement of the plant water potential connected with an IoT-capable datalogger. When connected to the DB2 platform, any calculations required are performed in the cloud using metadata from the sensors and data logger, requiring minimal input from the user.
Sensor combinations are built around two tiers of products, providing increasingly responsive and accurate solutions, culminating in a system that provides data that is suitable for detailed scientific study of plant water relations.

All systems are built upon the ICT International Datalogger, which is optimised for the DB2 data handling platform. Providing an all-in-one datalogger, with power management and data handling, the datalogger platform is expandable with optional communication and sensor expansion modules.
The dendrometers are available as either a band or pivot versions; the band is ideal for the measurement of established trees or plants, with a diameter of over 80 mm. The pivot dendrometer is ideal for young trees or plants, or individual branches. Whilst the band dendrometer measures the change in the circumference of the tree or plant, the pivot dendrometer will only measure the diameter change.
The SDI-12 Psychrometer is available to measure stem water potential (PSY-S Chamber) or leaf water potential (PSY-L Chamber).

Tier 1 Sensors (PWP-T1):
The Tier 1 dendrometer based solutions are
- Dendrometer: Measuring at a high temporal frequency with a 0.0001 mm increment the contraction and expansion of the plant, the dendrometer provides a long-term indication of the response to available water, driven by the atmospheric demands. Available with either the band dendrometer, with 60mm of measurement range, or the pivot dendrometer for use on small stems and branches, with 40mm of measurement range.
- Power System: Supplied with the Standalone power system, comprising a datalogger with a primary cell (single use battery), the very lower power consumption of this system combined with the ability to set alerts in the DB2 platform
Tier 3 Sensors (PWP-T3):
The Tier 3 system is ideal for the detailed analysis of plant water responses
- SDI-12 Psychrometer: Enabling the simultaneous measurement of the plant water potential, the soil water potential, and the atmospheric demand, the SDI-12 Psychrometer revolutionises the study of the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. Bringing the proven measurement technology from the PSY1 Psychrometer into and SDI-12 unit, the ability to continuously measure plant water potential at the same time every day from exactly the same plant
- Power System: Supplied with the Low Power system containing a 10-watt solar panel and matching mount, and an internal 6,000mAh battery. The power system can be expanded with a supplementary 10-watt solar panel and mount to provide additional charge when used in low light conditions (EP-L).
