PSY1 Psychrometer for Plant Water Potential
The ICT International Psychrometer is a unique, non-destructive, and continuous in-situ logging device for measuring plant water potential, in ecophysiology and plant hydraulic conductance experiments.
Plant water potential reflects the energy required to move the water from the soil to through the plant. Expressed as a unit of pressure, the measurement is often negative reflecting the extraction of water from the soil by the plant.
Water potential is influenced by several factors, including soil moisture, temperature, and the concentration of solutes (e.g. sugars, salts) in the plant. Low water potential can result in water stress for the plant, which can limit growth and reduce crop yields. On the other hand, high water potential can cause over-watering and result in root damage or other problems.
Measuring plant water potential is an important tool for understanding a plant’s water status and can help with irrigation and water management decisions.
