Tomography ARBOTOM® & ARBORADIX™
The Tomography ARBOTOM® Series 6 is a novel impulse tomography that enables an inside view of condition of trees and round wood. Hidden decay, invisible cavities, and cracks and how large they are become visible with ARBOTOM® using sound impulses. Stress waves travel through sound wood faster than through damaged wood. Sensors around the tree measure the time it takes an impulse to travel through the wood and reach the other sensors.
The Tomography ARBOTOM® Series 6 is easy to set up and handle, taking no more than 15-30 minutes per measurement. The tomograph image will show up immediately on a connected PC. It is non-destructive, sensor pins are driven only a few millimetres into the wood. A variable number of sensors can be attached to the system, starting with 8 Sensors for 2D images of small cross-section and up to 24 to create a 3D Image of bigger stems. The ARBOTOM® software completely documents all measured data, giving a chance to sort out single measurements, if needed.
ARBOTOM PACKAGES OPTIONS
The Tomography ARBOTOM® Series 6 is available in 4 versions:
- Basic version of 2D-Tomography (8 Sensors)
- Professional tomography inspection 2D (12 Sensors)
- Specialised 2D tomography expert version (16 Sensors) + Arboradix
- Scientific 2D/3D research version (24 Sensors) + Arboradix
The Tomography ARBOTOM® Series 6 can be paired with a Resistograph resistance drilling to increase the accuracy and confirm the ARBOTOM inspection.
ARBORADIX™ ATTACHMENT
With the ARBORADIX™ attachment, you can define the extent and location of the root system of a certain tree or plant.
Used in conjunction with the Tomography ARBOTOM® Series 6 , the ARBORADIX™ sensor allows the user to map roots. An additional sensor, connected to a steel pole, is placed on the ground in a measured grid pattern, and tapped. The stress wave signal is sent back to other sensors already attached to the tree. When roots are present the signal transmits rapidly along the roots, creating a pathway that can be mapped to define the extent and location of the root system.
By mapping out the stress wave patterns from a comprehensive grid pattern, the root locations can be defined. This is useful as a means of knowing where roots are likely to be located under roads, sidewalks or other coverings not easily removed beforehand.
The ARBORADIX™ attachment and software is available as an add on to existing ARBOTOM kits, or is included in the 16 and 24 sensor ARBOTOM Kits.
Main Features are:
- Fast and easy positioning of root sensor through quick buttons for changing root measurement distances.
- Roots with diameter of down to 2cm in a depth of down to 50cm detectable.
- Overall-stress wave speed from pin to sensor ranges from approx. 100 to 500m/s.
- Arbotom® sensors on stem base of tree react when mechanical impulse arrives.
- Line-graphs indicate major root area and extension/distance of major roots from stem base.

Advantages of Arbotom® to competing systems
• Flexible number of sensors, can be extended to over 50 sensors as required
• Flexible positioning distances between the sensors to fully map tree geometry
• Variable length of the highly flexible and robust sensor cables in 1m, 2m, 5m, 10m, 20m
• Sensors and cables can be replaced individually in the case of technical problems (no need to return
the complete equipment)
• Better overview of cabling thanks to serial connection of sensors
• Use of the same battery pack/charger for ARBOTOM and DYNATIM system (cost savings when
purchasing)
• Clip measurement and positioning possible, but not absolutely necessary
• Short and long sensor pins for passing through thin and thick bark
• Almost non-destructive testing thanks to minimally invasive sensor pins
• Secure hold of the sensors on the trunk (also upside down for measurements close to the ground)
• Fully transparent display of all measured values and deviations in the software
• Versatile modules for the software
• Data can be imported directly into ArboStApp to determine the relative safety
• Multiple connection options to the BatteryPack WLAN/BT/USB (e.g. in the event of radio interference
from transmission masts)
• Continuous operating time min. 7h (with 12 sensors)
• Constant ongoing development of the system through own application in the field of expertises
• All-in-one outdoor case system for Arbotom including ArboRadix (battery pack can remain in the case
during measurement, additional protection against damage, dirt and moisture)
• Online training videos included
Advantages of ARBORADIX to competing systems
• Root detector already included in the majority of packages
• Sonic impulse velocity measurements to determine the lateral expansion of the mechanically effective
root plate
• Localisation of structural roots (minimum diameter approx. 3-5 cm, maximum depth typically approx.
1 m, mainly depending on soil density and compaction also possible up to 2 m)
• Root detection possible radially or in a coordinate grid – depending on requirements
• Separable rod: quick assembly and disassembly of the rod and cable, for storage in the outdoor case
• LED display and output tone during measurement for feedback on data transmission
• Push-button switch to start the measurement, prevents unintentional triggering
