The SNiP-RFR is a 'Sensor Node Integrated Package' for LoRaWAN or CAT-M1 communication of real-time FAR Red light measurements for continuous plant, light and environmental monitoring.


The base SNiP-RFR integrates 1x S-NODE and 1x S2-431 Red – Far-Red sensor to a site’s unique network, communication and power requirements. The S-NODE can support an additional 3 sensors.

The S2-431 Red – Far-Red sensor is a digital sensor with SDI-12 communication protocol. Typical applications of red – far-red sensors include monitoring plant light environments, researching plant morphogenic activity, and photobiology studies.

The plant canopy selectively absorbs Deep Red wavelengths (approximately 660nm) more than Far-Red wavelengths (approximately 730nm) resulting in a decrease in the Red:Far-Red ratio of light toward the base of the canopy, such changes in light quality result in photomorphogenic changes in plant growth. In agricultural production systems an understanding of these responses is central to optimising planting density and canopy management.

Extended SNiP

The SNiP-RFR can be extended with 1x SQ-120 for further observation and monitoring of controlled environments. Combining the S2-431 and the SQ-120 allows for tighter monitoring of Deep Red, Far-Red light and PAR. See Further Specifications on the SQ-120 with Apogee’s Original Quantum PAR Series.


The S-NODE (for Environmental Monitoring) has been designed to support the broad suite of SDI-12 based environmental sensors. The S-NODE can support sensors with higher power requirements; a solar panel can charge either the internal lithium-ion battery or both the node and sensor can be powered by an external 12V system (e.g. battery or mains source).

A decoder suitable for TTN will be provided based upon sensor configuration.
