WATER-PAM

Chlorophyll Fluorometer for Phytoplankton
The WATER-PAM Chlorophyll Fluorometer is specialised for the study of highly diluted suspensions of unicellular algae, cyanobacteria, isolated chloroplasts, and protoplasts. It is ideally suited for the assessment of the content and photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton in natural surface waters. In conjunction with the WinControl software, it enables detailed analysis of phytoplankton photosynthetic performance, including the determination of effective quantum yield, relative electron transport rates, and light response curves.

About the System

WATER-PAM-II

The WATER-PAM-II is a highly sensitive and compact chlorophyll fluorometer that measures chlorophyll a and the photosynthetic activity of samples with very low chlorophyll content. It features a portable cuvette system, is lightweight, and can easily be switched between red and blue light modes.

It can also be used as a stand-alone device for simple measurements, or connected to a computer to run a series of commands or scripts through WinControl-3 software to conduct analysis protocols such as induction and light curves.

The WATER-PAM-II features differential analysis of algal content, determining the composition of algal populations across three groups (green algae, cyanobacteria, and brown algae) based on F-spectrum variation.

WATER-PAM Fiber Version

The Fiber version is also available and enables users to examine photosynthetic layers on various submerged surfaces (periphyton, microphytobenthos), soil crusts, and to screen samples on microwell plates. Because the Fiber version is less sensitive than the WATER-PAM-II, users should maintain a chlorophyll concentration of approximately 100–500 µg chl a/L.

The WATER-PAM Fiber comes in two configurations:

  • WATER-EDF1.5R: This configuration uses red measuring and actinic light and includes an additional blue LED, which selectively excites Photosystem I in cyanobacteria for F₀′ determination.

  • WATER-EDF1.5B: This configuration uses blue LEDs instead of red and employs a far-red LED light source to excite Photosystem I in non-cyanobacterial photosynthetic organisms.
