Tomography ARBOTOM® Series 6

The Tomography ARBOTOM® Series 6 is a novel impulse tomography that enables an inside view of condition of trees and round wood. Hidden decay, invisible cavities, and cracks and how large they are become visible with ARBOTOM® using sound impulses. Stress waves travel through sound wood faster than through damaged wood. Sensors around the tree measure the time it takes an impulse to travel through the wood and reach the other sensors.

The Tomography ARBOTOM® Series 6 is easy to set up and handle, taking no more than 15-30 minutes per measurement. The tomograph image will show up immediately on a connected PC. It is non-destructive, sensor pins are driven only a few millimetres into the wood. A variable number of sensors can be attached to the system, starting with 8 Sensors for 2D images of small cross-section and up to 24 to create a 3D Image of bigger stems. The ARBOTOM® software completely documents all measured data, giving a chance to sort out single measurements, if needed.

ARBOSTAPP SOFTWARE

ARBOSTAPP™ provides arborists and experts with a tool allowing the determination of strength loss due to structural defects in the cross sections of stems and branches and anchorage plate losses in relation to canopy size and expected wind-loads. In addition, the application enables evaluation of load reduction by crown reduction pruning to further achieve higher safety in damaged trees. The inputs are based on the users visual observations rather than diagnostic instruments but enable accurate (if not as precise) estimations of safety which are sufficient for many tree assessment purposes. However, the precision of the evaluation can be increased by putting in results from proper sonic tomography or resistance drilling with density-calibrated devices.

ARBOSTAPP™ is available in 3 versions:

  • ARBOSTAPP™ Pro: Define crown and estimate wind load reduction by reduction pruning cuts. Drawing of intact and decayed/missing parts in cross-section and root-plate area for calculating strength loss.
  • ARBOSTAPP™ Exp: Define crown and estimate wind load reduction by reduction pruning cuts. Drawing of intact and decayed/missing parts in cross-section and root-plate area for calculating strength loss.
Modify basic wind and site/terrain parameters. Maturity correction of required shell-wall for estimating acceptable strength-loss level.
  • ARBOSTAPP™ Sci: Define crown and estimate wind load reduction by reduction pruning cuts. Drawing of intact and decayed/missing parts in cross-section and root-plate area for calculating strength loss.
Modify basic wind and site/terrain parameters. Maturity correction of required shell-wall for estimating acceptable strength-loss level.
Modify specific wind parameter (porosity, topology correction, gust-and resonance factors).

The Tomography ARBOTOM® Series 6 can be paired with a Resistograph resistance drilling to increase the accuracy and confirm the ARBOTOM inspection.

ARBORADIX attachment

With the ARBORADIX attachment, you can define the extent and location of the root system of a certain tree or plant.

Used in conjunction with the Tomography ARBOTOM® Series 6 , the ARBORADIX  sensor allows the user to map roots. An additional sensor, connected to a steel pole, is placed on the ground in a measured grid pattern, and tapped. The stress wave signal is sent back to other sensors already attached to the tree. When roots are present the signal transmits rapidly along the roots, creating a pathway that can be mapped to define the extent and location of the root system.

By mapping out the stress wave patterns from a comprehensive grid pattern, the root locations can be defined. This is useful as a means of knowing where roots are likely to be located under roads, sidewalks or other coverings not easily removed beforehand.

The ARBORADIX attachment and software is available as an add on to existing ARBOTOM kits, or is included in the 16 and 24 sensor ARBOTOM Kits.

Main Features are:

  • Fast and easy positioning of root sensor through quick buttons for changing root measurement distances.
  • Roots with diameter of down to 2cm in a depth of down to 50cm detectable.
  • Overall-stress wave speed from pin to sensor ranges from approx. 100 to 500m/s.
  • Arbotom® sensors on stem base of tree react when mechanical impulse arrives.
  • Line-graphs indicate major root area and extension/distance of major roots from stem base.
