Extraction Plates

The SEC Extraction Plates along with SEC Extractor systems provides the calculation of soil moisture retention curves. All extraction plates are 27.3 cm (10.75″) diameter

The main difference between one bar standard and one bar high flow is that one bar standard will last longer under pressure before a pore fails (dumps its water) and the plate no longer works.  This is because one bar standard is talc in clay body and is like sheets of paper, it has a longer path through the ceramic. One bar high flow is more like particles and hence has a much better flow rate and a shorter path through the ceramic. The pore sizes are 1.7 micron for one bar standard and 2.5 micron for one bar high flow. If the soil particles of the sample are bigger than 2.5 microns then one bar high flow is a better choice. If the soil particles of the sample are closer to 1.7 microns the one bar standard will work better than the one bar high flow. Water does not like to flow from small particle to larger particle so this is the reason for that phenomenon.
